Happy Birthday Dr. King!
For the past few years I have made it a point to read a book or at least a few essays of King’s work between today and April 4th, the date of his assassination. As a result, I have gotten to know him a bit better and found lessons we need to remember in our country today. He challenged our nation to be a better place. He warned us to change our values or face spiritual death. I think his words are important because they can help provide a moral compass guiding our way to address the issues before us.
But to know King’s message you must read it for yourself. We usually only get sound bites, clips and quotes used to support many causes. But what did King say about poverty, religion, communism, education, housing, jobs and war? Most important are his thoughts on love and the Beloved Community. We need something in this world today. I think we have enough hate. We are missing love.
Take sometime between today and April 4th to read King himself or a book about him. Read a few essays, a chapter or a whole book. You will be better for it and it is a great way to honor his legacy.
Show King Some Love.
